Casco Viejo is Panama City’’s historic center with cobblestone streets and colonial-era landmarks. In the heart of it all lies Amarla Boutique Hotel Casco Viejo, Panama’s first adult-only boutique hotel, full of history, charm, lush greenery, and local artisan crafts. I had the pleasure of staying at Amarla Casco Viejo and can attest that it is an absolute gem in Panama City’s Casco Viejo district.

The aspect that I love the most at Amarla Casco Viejo is its refreshingly natural boho style. Natural light and natural elements make this hotel a flourishing oasis, constructed from natural wood, handmade ceramics, metals, fabrics and stone, inspired by nature and the history of the building. Everywhere you turn in this 4-floor hotel is a charming moment waiting to be captured. From the dances of long angelic greenery dangling from the floors above to the vibrance of the pink blossoming flowers on the rooftop terrace, staying at Amarla is a continuous breath of fresh air.
Aside from the charm of the building, there are many other characteristics that make this hotel simply and truly unduplicatable. First, are the silk kimonos specially crafted for Amarla in Indonesia that are placed in every room. It’s a beautiful touch that intertwines comfort with culture and creates a unique experience for guests enjoying breakfast, walking to the rooftop terrace, or just hanging out in the privacy of the rooms. Most of the furniture at Amarla was crafted by local artisans, with some exceptions that were made in the city of Santa Marta, Colombia. The rooms are decorated with artifacts, crafts, original framed photos, and beautiful touches that transform the space into a memorable escape. It’s very special to me that Amarla holds a creative space for design, art, photography, culinary arts and music. The hotel’s rooftop terrace has a refreshing cold-water jacuzzi and endless Cathedral views. The attention to detail at Amarla Casco Viejo is truly unmatched.
Amarla Boutique Hotel Casco Viejo is also set apart by its high level of service. With just eight en-suite guest rooms, the experience at Amarla is quite intimate. The entire team, from the front desk to the restaurant, people you pass by, and everyone in between, is extremely welcoming, kind, helpful, and passionate about creating great experiences for the guests.
Amarla Boutique Hotel’s restaurant, Kaandela, is an outstanding gastronomic experience. Breakfast, served daily from 7:00 – 10:00 AM, is the most beautiful way to kickstart the morning. The delicious and creative menu items and soul-warming coffees are the perfect compliment to the restaurant’s stunning atmosphere. With blue and white tiles, detailed fountain, and trees, Kaandela’s central courtyard covered with a glass roof is the most beautiful place to indulge.
Kaandela turns up the heat at dinnertime with its expansive menu options and specialty cocktails. I had the pleasure of enjoying dinner at the open kitchen area where I got to witness Executive Chef Edy and team craft the best dishes over open grills and explain them upon being served. Kaandela serves dishes with global origins and local resources and is an interactive experience that I suggest should not be missed!
Amarla’s prime location in the heart of Casco Viejo makes it not only a gorgeous place to stay in Panama City, but also an extremely functional one. The incredible level of service, beautiful building, eco-friendly mission, artistic and artisan concept, and high attention to detail make Amarla Boutique Hotel Casco Viejo a must-visit when traveling to Panama City, Panama.
