World-Famous Outdoor Landmark In Altoona, Pennsylvania | The View Of Altoona’s Horseshoe Curve From Above

I’ve always loved the ambiance of the Horseshoe Curve located not far from where I grew up in Altoona, Pennsylvania!

I was super excited to have the opportunity to briefly visit the Horseshoe Curve when I was home to capture its long tracks and large bend lightly frosted with snow.

A bit of history: The Hourseshoe Curve was completed in 1854 to lessen the grade to the summit of the Allegheny Mountains. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966, and it became a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2004.

Now, there is a Railroaders Memorial Museum where you can check out some exhibits and history on the Curve. You can also take the incline (or stairs) up the hillside to unwind at the trackside observation park and watch as the many trains roll by.

It is a very peaceful place for adults yet interesting for children who love trains. I recommend checking it out if you fin yourself in Central Pennsylvania! (The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the hours of the museum so definitely do your research before you go.)

For now, enjoy these quick aerial views!
