What You Need To Know Before Hiking El Yunque Rainforest In Puerto Rico

Did you know El Yunque Rainforest is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System?

This enchanting gem is located in northeastern Puerto Rico, about 45 minutes from San Juan. Filled with waterfalls, natural pools, hiking trails, and the singing sounds of Puerto Rico’s famous coquí frog; El Yunque National Forest makes the perfect soul-refreshing day-trip while visiting the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.

Two of the most popular ways to visit El Yunque are by booking a guided tour or renting a car and driving yourself. There are many different third-party tours to chose from with different time allotments and included items (lunch, snacks etc.). We chose to rent a car and drive ourselves, which was very easy. Driving directions are very clear, and there is plenty of parking within the park.

Do note that you are required to make a reservation online prior to entering El Yunque National Forest. To make a reservation, visit recreation.gov.

When preparing to visit El Yunque, I definitely recommend wearing sneakers or hiking boots, wearing bug spray & sunscreen, bringing water & snacks, and taking ponchos, umbrellas &/or an extra set of dry clothes.

Our hike on Mt. Britton trail was moderate, very humid, a bit sweaty, and a little slippery. The trail is very wet in a lot of places, so it is very easy to misstep, (especially on the way back down). At the peak of Mt. Britton trail is a castle-like observation tower. It was rewarding to make it to the peak, being surrounded by misty clouds making it feel like we were existing in blank space. Once we made it back down the trail, it was extra exhilarating to see how far and high the peak was from the beginning of the trail.

I recommend adding El Yunque to your Puerto Rico itinerary. It is thrilling yet serene. The sounds of nature, the coquí frongs, waterfalls, lush greenery and mountain views are breathtaking and feel surreal.

Please leave a comment if you have any questions & enjoy visiting this majestic rainforest amongst the mountains of the enchanted island of Puerto Rico.
